The Two-Zoo Question Berlin Never Explains

Zoo Berlin (west): dense, historic, the world's longest species list. Tierpark (east): Europe's largest landscape zoo, cheaper and roomier. Who should pick which.

Updated August 2026

Cold-War Berlin built everything twice, zoos included - and the two survivors are so different that “which is better” is really “which trip are you on.” Here’s the split without the tourism- board diplomacy.

Zoo Berlin: the collection

The 1844 original by the Ku’damm: 35 hectares, around 20,000 animals, the most species-rich zoo on the planet, plus the Aquarium next door. Its virtues are density and biography - the Elephant Gate, the panda garden, houses that have been famous for a century. Its honest weakness is the same density: this is a classic city zoo, and the big-animal enclosures show their 19th-century footprint. Transit is unbeatable: its own S+U station, 15 minutes from Mitte.

Tierpark: the landscape

The East’s 1955 answer, out at Friedrichsfelde on the U5: 160 hectares, Europe’s largest landscape zoo - herds with actual room, walking distances that feel like a park because it is one, and officially cheaper entry (14.50 euro online, 22.50 at the till). Its weakness mirrors its virtue: you’ll walk kilometres, see fewer species per hour, and give it a full day to do it justice.

The honest router

First Berlin visit, half a day, want the famous names: Zoo Berlin - the flexible ticket or the zoo’s own webshop, argued honestly on the price page. Small kids who need lawns, a stroller, a whole day: Tierpark, and buy at tierpark-berlin.de - we earn nothing on that advice, which is rather the point of this site. Both? Different days. The annual-pass math only works for locals; visitors choose.
